1. Waikiki Beach
This iconic landmark in Waikiki is one of Hawaii’s most famous beaches, located on the south shore of Oahu. Waikiki Beach is the birthplace of modern surfing culture—look out for the statue of renowned waterman Duke Kahanamoku, who popularized the sport internationally. Once the playground of Hawaiian royals, today the beachfront is lined with resorts and some of Hawaii’s most historic hotels. Surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers flock to this beach all day long.
2. Koko Crater Railway Trail
This is the trailhead for the challenging Koko Crater Stairs in Honolulu, HI. Also known as the “Koko Head Stairs,” this abandoned WWII railway track is a steep and challenging hiking trail with over 1,000 steps (but worth it for the panoramic views). NOT recommend going when it’s raining as the stairs get pretty slippery – all the more reason to go super early and catch the good weather/small crowds.
3. King Kamehameha Statue
In front of the Aliiolani Hale building is the King Kamehameha I Statue. Facing Iolani Palace on the corner of King and Mililani streets, this landmark depiction of the warrior king who united the Hawaiian Islands emits a sense of strength and unity as he stands with outstretched arms.
4. Spitting Cave of Portlock
If you have heard about spitting caves and know how to find it it is one of the most beautiful areas you will find on Oahu. This place is nestled in between two magnificent pieces of property – one with a house, the other with a house being built on the site.
Very suitable for a self-driving attraction, not only the scenery along the way is super good, but also the blue sky, white clouds and sea here, the whole scenery is quite good, the endless sea view is really refreshing.
5. Hawaii State Art Museum
Galleries temporarily closed until February 10, 2023 while new exhibits are installed. Contemporary art of Hawaii and free, family-friendly events! 2nd floor of the No. 1 Capitol District Building, 250 South Hotel Street, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96813. Admission is free. Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday 10am to 4pm. Open late First Friday of each month, 6pm – 9pm (galleries close at 8:30pm). Closed Sunday and all state and federal holidays. All artwork on display has a connection to Hawaii (e.g. artist born or raised in Hawaii). Parking available across the street in the Ali’i Place parking structure (entrance at 1099 Alakea St, cash only) or at Iolani Palace (metered parking, 25 cent coins only). Several TheBus lines stop in front of or close to the building. If you are taking a taxi cab, there is a small pull in area on Richards St. Wheelchair access from the Richards St. entry gate, on the Richards St. side of the building.
